Was just checking out the recent free projects, and love love LOVE this week's sewing and fashion project - funky denim headbands. Now that summer's coming (fingers crossed!), I'm starting to think about ways to wear my hair up, and looking at the lovely butterfly, corsage and ribbon hair accessories in the shops. Gorgeous, but a bit expensive for a thrifty sewer such as myself, so am looking at ways to create my own hair accessories.
Raking through my sewing stuff, I've found various bits of ribbon, scraps of fabric, buttons and beads. I've also got tons of old hair clips, bobby pins and stuff. Now I just have to think of a way to bring it all together . . .
The denim headbands have really inspired me to have a go at something, so does anyone have any more ideas?!
Hi! Christine here. For those of you who frequent the Mixed Media + Collage blog here at MyCraftivity, you may have seen my recent posts on my trip to MakerFaire. As a quick introduction, MakerFaire is a show put on by the creators of Make and Craft magazines. The exhibitors are all people who make things—be it crafts or science stuff like they feature in Make magazine. There were demos throughout the day, and I attended one by Moxie, in which she showed us how to make sewn monsters (see this blog post for the full report).
One of the exhibitors was Psycho Girlfriend, a group of three designers, who brought some fabulous dresses to show. I love a good dress, even ones that are made of binder clips, swim noodles or vinyl. Here are a few images from their web site for a bit of flavor.
For those into vintage crafts, Cathy of California has a stockpile of discontinued looms and craft straw that she sells at shows and on her Etsy site. She made these fancy flowers that she sold at the show as well.
Hi, it’s me, Christine. You know, sometimes I just don’t get done all that I mean to do. Somehow time slips away, and all those super cute things I’d been meaning to make just don’t end up made. That’s when I turn to Plan B: Etsy. Etsy.com is an online marketplace for all things handmade. Whether you’re looking for a last-minute gift or just the perfect something for your home, you could very well find it amongst the shops at Etsy.
Here are a few things that tickled my fancy recently.
Hi, it's me, Christine. I spent some time this afternoon purusing the MyCraftivity gallery, and i see that my friend Kristin is doing some home decor sewing (my current fascination, as well). Pillows, window treatments--what fun! Here are some pictures of what she's been up to.
These are pillows that she made from using placemats (two per pillow). I love the idea of using placemats because they can be slightly heavier in weight than quilting fabric (which can be nice for pillows) and the sizes are really manageable.
And she's been making curtains, too!
Thanks, Kristin, for sharing your projects in the gallery! Any member of our happy sewing group can post images directly to the sewing gallery. Just click on the large sewing icon at the top of the page, then click on Latest Gallery Post, then click Upload on the far right side of the screen. These images will be in the sewing gallery so that all the sewing fans will be sure to find them. And when you load the images, please put your user name in the caption, so we know who to oooh and aaah to!
My last post had me contemplating window treatments, so I couldn't help but share a funky window treatment option in this week's free project. And check out Mary Beth's thoughts on the subject in my original post. Thanks, Mary Beth!
