    Window Treatments

Hi, it’s me, Christine. I have a new obsession. It’s window treatments. I’m thinking about moving, and with moving comes redecorating, and with redecorating comes painting, and with painting comes new window treatments. Thus the new obsession.

I’ve made a few curtains in my day—just simple hemmed pieces of fabric that I inserted on the curtain rod and scrunched up artfully. Mainly just using regular cotton fabric from the sale area of my favorite local quilt shop. But I’m thinking I’m ready to step up my game. New patterns! New fabrics! So, I’m coming to you, dear reader, for some inspiration. What kind of window treatments have you made? What worked and what didn’t? Share your photos in the gallery—I’d love to see what you’ve made!

    Until next time,
    Christine

I am getting ready to make some valances soon. We are building my painting studio, and I wanted something unique for my windows. I have yards and yards of artist canvas, so I though maybe I could make them out of canvas..? I am envisioning a simple valance with a slight curve (scallop) to it. I will basecoat them then paint a rabbit on each one (my cabinetry will be rabbit hutches). Since I'm no semstress, I was wondering if I can do this with (strong) glue. I am particularly concerned about the rod casing turning with the rod on the ends. Then maybe finishing the edges with a trim -- gimp, beaded fringe, etc. If anyone has some advice I'd love to hear it!

hi, quilts of all types make neat curtains, to tie back with lacey or solid color, with a nice multi-color, ( on top, for valance, ideas: denim with patwork, designs from paint, ribbon, nice and creative buttons, sown on, old nrooches, etc.
You can pick up nice panels of color of your choice at many seonnd hand places. In my bedroom, I owned a yellow/gold trimmed comforter with greens, yellows, golds and blaks, and natural. I made a pair of large checked curtains, on the bottom I added long off white fringe, which matched a pair of antique sild gold valances with great fringe, so it matched, and the valances are gathered and lovely with the flow of upside down arches, gathering the sild just right. For summer, I bought a piece, a long wide piece of lacy material with embroidered red and gold flowers...cut in half, is long and made panals...for a lighter look and to add light, and to add red in the room.
Don't buy rods, plain old wooden dowel rods, painted, wrapped with fabric, or wallpaper, or decopaged, etc, are really cheap and creative ideas!! If you want wooden shapes like a large ball at each end, get them at craft store, again, unpainted, and paint, or decorate as wanted, hotglue or wood glue to ends of dowel rods. saving 70%, in proper length and around, and simple supporting things to support the dowels, I covered on pair with fabric, red silk, for my red and white panels, and added a large floral valance, which covered top and flowed on each side down, to either leave for less light, or tie back, which I make from scrap, or painted rope, or a combo of braided fabric, ribbon, and or yarn, in different combos.
In style, a nice panel style, with lighter colors and or patterns, then the bottom added, a solid or stripe, not too patterney, that rests about and inch and a half, on the floor, and extend to just below bottom of window, if they are raised, or about two feet or so from bottom. For nice decor at top, I then added three dowels the length of the window, added 3 solid colore, with a flower cut out of one, a heart the second, and a M for my name, lined the back of the solids with white sheer,or cheap sheer from fabric department, so the back of the cutouts showed this...breaks monotony up, adds a personal touch, and the solid bottoms, add some elegance, I love the inch and a half or so, on the floor.
A white sheet: tie dye, dye, use paint, sew on at top, threaded beads or strings of beads, of choice, add a simple colored set of or one valance, add fringe, cr cut in wavy pattern, or triangle down from sides, add ruffles, these are all creative ideas. Once I found a really cool red sheet with the pattern of patchwork on it, made a denim valance, for elegance, added blue beaded, and white alternate for tie backs, and long red fringe to bottom of valance.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
I say make it homy, and personal, elegant and homey, or whatever, .....Nice to be here, All my Best, Mary Beth, mbeetlebug
