Palleiko Designs is providing a one of a kind necklace titled "Hope".
Hand crafted from sterling silver, the multicolored glass focal piece
was created by glass artist Patty Lakinsmith. Large teal chalcedony faceted stones grace each side of the neck. The
spiral design is borrowed from ancient Egyptian, Greek and Celtic
motifs and symbolism. Spiral motfis span many cultures and symbolize
rebirth and life ever unfolding. I finally finished it!

About the Avon Foundation and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
The
Avon Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, was founded in 1955 to
improve the lives of women and their families, and Avon philanthropic
programs worldwide have raised and awarded more than $500 million. Now
past the half century milestone, the Avon Foundation brings this
mission to life through two key areas: breast cancer and domestic
violence. The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade launched in 1992, and Avon
breast cancer programs in some 50 countries support advancing access to
care and finding a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on the
medically underserved. Funding is awarded to beneficiaries ranging from
leading cancer centers to community-based breast health programs for
awareness and education; screening and diagnosis; access to treatment;
support services; and scientific research. Fundraising is through a
variety of “pink ribbon” products, events, races and walks. The largest
is the U.S. Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series, which began in 2003.

This evening San Francisco, CA native Nancy McNally is the featured artist.
Originally
a theater set designer and costumer, Nancy McNally's career has been a
vast and full one. A life long artist and lover of the arts, Nancy is a
mixed media fine arts painter, fabric painter, origami & glass
artist, activist... and so much more.
McNally first started
creating origami cranes in 1978 for a wedding she catered. She has
since created cranes for many private collections as well as large
events; Nancy recently created 1,000 cranes for a breast cancer
awareness foundation benefit.
Crane Lore(from Nancy's website): "The
crane motif is an ancient symbol in marriages in Japan, symbolizing
fidelity, prosperity and longevity. In Japan the crane is known as 'the
bird of happiness'. The Chinese believe that cranes are symbols of
wisdom. There is an association of the crane with celebration of peace
and prayers for those lost in war. The crane is also associated with
poets. Greek and Roman myths portray the dance of cranes as a love of
joy and a celebration of life. The crane is the bird of Apollo, the Sun
God. Apollo disguised himself as a crane when on visits to the mortal
world."
In
addition to her cranes, McNally also creates stunning hand-painted
glass wear that is sure to spark conversation at any dinner party.
Created using special glass paint imported from France, her glassware
is fully functional.
During the 1980s when the AIDS epidemic was
heightening (especially in the Castro district of San Francisco) Nancy
created positive change in her community by founding the National AIDS Memorial Grove located in Golden Gate Park in 1987.
From their website: "In
1996, a milestone was reached when Congress and the President of the
United States approved the "National AIDS Memorial Grove Act", which
officially designates the historic DeLaveaga Dell in Golden Gate Park,
as the nation's first AIDS memorial. True to its origins, the Grove is
a dedicated public landscape where anyone who has been touched by AIDS
can find comfort, grieve openly without being stigmatized, and
experience feelings of hope that nature can inspire."
McNally's grief and determination led to creating a nationally recognized memorial that "honors
the memory of all who have shared in the struggle against AIDS. She is
an artist who has a profound sense of what is right and wrong in this
world. She stands up for what she believes in and continues in her
efforts to make our society a better place in which to live. Nancy's work is available for purchase at these locations: http://www.nancymcnally.net http://localcolorist.etsy.com
I
am always on the lookout for new and interesting things to incorporate
into my designs. Usually I make very planned out purchases when I am
ordering materials for work... usually.
Then I came across this
absolutely stunning lampworked glass focal bead created by glass artist
Patty Lakinsmith (also a PMC artist) as part of her "Tuff Enough to
Wear Pink" October Charity Sales Event, where 100% of the proceeds from
sales of pink items go to the Susan G Komen for the Cure. I made a spur
of the moment decision because this is one of the most stunning
specimens of lampwork I have seen in a long time.
Hailing from
the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, Patty has been in love with
beads since herchildhood, growing up in the midwest. She is a member of
the International Society of Glass Beadmakers, WetCanvas, Lampwork
Etc., and is a registered Self Representing Artist.
I can't wait
for this precious little gem of a piece to arrive. I am planning to use
it in one of my large spiral necklace pieces (see the turquoise spiral
necklace in the slide show above) as I think it will provide a stunning
element that will catch everyone's eye.
October is breast cancer awareness month and The Ellen DeGeneres
Show is raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Being that I
support Komen and have created several pieces in the past for breast
cancer awareness I felt compelled to write Ellen with a proposal.
Dear Ellen,
I
am not a breast cancer survivor. I am however a woman with a mother and
two daughters of my own. I have friends and family members who have
survived breast cancer. I have close friends who have lost their
spouses to cancer and I have seen first hand how it's ravages affect
families.
I am a metalsmith and jewelry designer in the Los
Angeles area and would like to donate a piece of jewelry to your show
that can be auctioned off to raise money for your cause. The item I
currently have in mind is a necklace valued at over $600.
I am also interested in providing a piece for The Ellen Show every year.
I hope that your viewers will see your show this month and see that they too can create change and make a difference.
Sincerely, Heather
Here is the piece I would like to donate this year (I would have liked to have a piece using rose quartz):
I've
been working with wool for about 2 months now (wet felting and needle
felting) creating felted necklaces and bracelets to add to my
collection of contemporary craft skills. (metalsmith by education and
trade)
I am really
enjoying this process as it is more forgiving and I am less likely to
saw off a finger, get metal dust in my eyes or chemicals, or go broke
from material costs. With needle felting stabbing a finger with a three
inch long felting needle doesn't usually invite a trip to the ER. It is
portable and I can pack all my tools in a reusable canvas tote bag and work anywhere I want (great when balancing full-time parenting aka domestic production coordinator and work).
The
first piece I made I wore out to see what kind of response it received
from the general public. (I do this with all my new pieces, metal or
fiber, to determine if any changes need to be made (or the whole idea
scrapped completely) and if they can withstand a day of elementary
school aged children. If the piece makes it through the day in one
piece, and receives positive feedback, then it passes.) Within 30
minutes of wearing the piece I had a special order for another one.
This definitely helped me feel like I was going in the right direction. Since
then I have been dreaming up new ideas and have about 6 pieces I am
working on. These pictures are of one of the more simple pieces which
is almost finished:
And the creative process continues...

I
came across Janine King's amazing shop on Etsy.com and covet almost
every bag she makes. If you are looking for something contemporary and
