A Beadalicious Interview with Sonya Nimri

Wednesday, May 21, 2008, 09:58 AM CST [General]

I first met Sonya Nimri on an episode of Craft Lab.  She showed up with a ton of duct tape in a rainbow assortment of color and we proceeded to decorate a room with a circus theme.  She had me at rainbow colors, but throw in a circus and all bets are off!  This was my kind of crafty girl.  Just when I thought I couldn't dig her crafty chili anymore she comes out with a wonderfully luscious new jewelry book called Beadalicious.  The book focuses on reinventing, revamping and up cycling old jewelry.  It is a familiar theme with a fresh spin.  Think of earrings shaped like cherries and sparkly resin filled sea shell pendants.  Did I mention the recipes and the rain boots?  For anyone who is smitten on how-to jewelry books Beadalicious is one you should have in your collection.  As someone who themselves is in the process of putting a book out I wanted to get the full scoop from Sonya about Beadalicious so I did a little interview to get the goods.

The tag line on the Beadalicious press release says "those may be your grandmother's beads, but this is not your grandmothers jewelry".  Were either of your grandmothers fashionistas with a great stash of baubles that helped inspire any of the projects?.  I have both of my grandmothers costume jewelry and one had enough to fit inside a box of cards and the other had 2 giant jewelry boxes full.  They were both equally loveable, just one happened to be a little more fashion savvy.

Neither of my grandmothers actually wore much jewelry.  They grew up overseas so where they were from costume jewelry wasn't in fashion at the time.  Most of my jewelry comes from my husbands grandmothers who were costume jewelry horders!  I have tons from them.  Some of it is really wild and outdated but after you take the beads apart and recombine it with newer beads, it becomes just fab.  That is probably what's good about  it not being from my side of the family, I'm not too attached to it and don't mind disassembling it all.

I love that you snuck in recipes as your sidebars.  I must confess my favorite margarita cupcake recipe makes an appearance in The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girls Guide to Jewelry.  What inspired you to include recipes along with jewelry projects?

I love food and grew up loving to cook as well as craft.  The title Beadalicious implies juicy, mouthwatering, creamy- everything to do with food. Bringing in the elements of juicy fresh cherries, deep sticky caramel, and creamy dips just seemed to go.  Plus, beading works up an appetite- and a girl's gotta eat!

The name Beadalicious is a bit deceiving because as I mentioned not only does the reader get amazing jewelry projects and recipes there is also the extra goodies section tucked away in the back of the book.  It's like a hidden bonus track on a CD with daisy covered rain boots and book mark projects.  As an ADD crafter I loved that about the book!  What made you decide to throw in these fun non bead related projects?

For me beading isn't just about jewelry and I wanted my book to reflect different ways of using beads to make fun gifts for friends or just ideas of ways to use them besides the obvious.  Also, many times beads come in bulk and after a project is over you still have a gazillion more beads that you may not feel a need to make yet another necklace with.

I often travel to Los Angeles whether it be to see friends and have geleto in San Monica like you and I did or to film a few episodes of Craft Lab.  Even after all my travels I am not sure where the best thrift stores in town are hidden.  For all of us that collect vintage costume jewelry to re-create into something Beadalicious where are a few of your favorite haunts?

I can't wait till the next time you're here for another round of gelato!  I'm such an addict and have an adorable place in Venice that we can ride bikes along the beach to the gelato place from.  Thrift stores are really hit and miss depending on their shipment.  I once scored three huge boxes of vintage fruit beads from a bead shop that had closed down at St. Vincent's in Culver City but have been back since and haven't found anything there.  I shop at Goodwill and Salvation Army in Santa Monica, and love the Rosebowl flea market in Pasadena.  I don't actually have a "hidden spot" I go to regularly.  I try my luck at different places and always keep my energy open to new beads coming into my life from wherever they may appear.

The name Sparkles on the Half Shell cracks me up, but it also happens to be one of my favorite projects in Beadalicious.  I love the brooch version!  If you had to choose one project, what was your favorite to make?  What about from Just for the Frill of it?

Wow, Jen, That's like choosing between children!  I can't say, I really love them all.  I would say the one I wear the most is the "cosy nest" ring.  It's a ring in the shape of a bird's nest.  I get tons of compliments on it and it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling like I have someone's delicate, precious, home resting on my finger.  From my first book, Just for the Frill of It, I'd say my favorite project is the purse with ribbon trim and wooden handle made out of the neck of a turtleneck.  It goes with everything!

On the flip of that was there any one project in Beadalicious that about drove you to drink?  There always seems to be that one project that is great in theory and concept, but when you start making it into a reality it about kills you.

All the projects are really simple to make.  But, I would say figuring out how to translate the "Cat Lady" from what I was seeing in my head was the most confusing part of writing the book.  I knew I wanted it to be really long and Bohemian-Elizabethan.  It was draping in all sorts of weird directions at first, and I couldn't get it to hang right.  It took a while and a few greyhounds to get me though it but now, for the reader it would be quite simple to make with the directions and graphs all laid out.

I myself am partial to huge earrings (I can't wait to make the Black and White Ball Earrings).  What is your preferred jewelry staple?  I find people are typically partial to one type of jewelry above all others.  The world wants to know is Sonya an earring, brooch or necklace kind of gal?

Sonya is a ring kind of gal.  I like to play with them on my finger and spin the beads and band around.  My Bohemian Wrapsody ring is ideal for fiddling with.

You are a lady who always likes to have her crafty irons in oodles of fires.  What is on the crafty horizon for Sonya Nimri?  Any new books in the works?  TV appearances I should set my DVR for (our foam crafts episode of Craft Lab is on HGTV June 16th by the way)?  Booths at CHA were I might find you in July?

At the moment, I'm working on a video for Craft: magazine's blog- it's going up next month.  I'm also developing a video series for my website sonyastyle.com, easy fun crafts- each one is about a minute long.  Besides that I just finished working on a craft dvd series with Raven-Symone that will be for sale at Wal-Mart soon.  This Summer I will see you at the CHA!  Yeah, I'm so glad you're going to be there.  I missed you at the last one!   I'll be at the Duncan booth in July as a guest designer and the Watson-Guptill booth signing both books.

On a personal note, I've got a big bun in the oven at the moment.  He's a gigantic boy with really long legs and huge feet.  He's due right before Halloween so at the moment I'm deciding on his very first Halloween costume.  Also, I'm trying to figure out what to name him.  It's really quite a task that will have a huge impact on this poor kid's life so I'm trying to be very thoughtful about it.

Thanks Sonya for the amazing interview and good luck cooking up that big ole' baby of yours.  I smell a baby craft book next!

Naughty Secretary Club at BEA in Los Angeles

Tuesday, May 20, 2008, 09:40 AM CST [General]

A book convention, how exciting could it possibly be I thought to myself? Don't get me wrong I was excited for the trip to Los Angeles, excited to chat with the PR guy at F&W and excited for dinner at Spagos. However, I didn't know BEA was such a big deal and that I was excited for all the wrong reasons. Thanks to a few author friends cluing me in I now know that the Book Expo of America is kind of a big deal. Once I started looking through the list of the authors that were going to be there I could see that for myself. My eyes were of course drawn to names like Dionne Warwick, Bobby Brown, William Shatner and Alec Baldwin. Ya, ya, ya there are going to be New York Times best selling novelist there too. But more importantly, what if I take a bathroom break and I am waiting in line next to Dionne Warwick! Do you think she would be able to psychically tell me how many copies of The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girls Guide to Jewelry we are going to sell?

Either way I am super duper excited and now honored to go. I guess I better start planning my outfits and maybe make an appointment to get my eyebrows threaded. There is an autographing schedule happening in the F&W booth which scares me slightly. Not that signing my name scares me, the idea of no one wanting me to sign my name scares me. I envision the booth during my allotted time looking like a ghost town with tumble weeds rolling through. Let's hope not! I'll pay you a dollar if you come by and act like a fan to impress my publisher! Ok not really I'll need to save my royalty checks. Here is a list of when you can fer sure find me in the booth doing jewelry demos and talking about The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girls Guide to Handmade Jewelry. We are even going to have Naughty Secretary Club T-shirts to give away! I have not seen them yet so that scares me slightly, but you can always order one from the website and just wear it there!

    F&W Publications Booth #1351

    Friday May 30th 2:00-3:30pm
    Booth reception 3:30

    Saturday May 31st 2:00-3:30
    Booth reception 3:30

Check it out I am even listed on the official BEA autographing PDF right below Ty Pennington!

There are going to be lots of other authors there that look interesting and fun to meet. I wonder if I will get free books! I want to try and meet Daniel Vosovic from Project Runway and author of Fashion Inside Out. I'm excited about a lot of the books that will be in the F&W Booth with me as well. Wendy Molynex's Everything is Wrong With You, Forgotten Fashion by Katie Hahn plus Stefanie Japel and her new book Glam Knits! I don't knit but from the looks of her blog Laurie Perry author of Crazy Aunt Purl's Drunk Divorced and Covered in Cat Hair and I would get along just fine. Speaking of not knitting I know enough about it to know the name Stephanie Pearl-McPhee and her book series the Yarn Harlot. Between my own demos in the F&W Booth and running around trying to snag free books and goodies I should be pretty busy!

Secretary's Delight Resin Bracelet How-To Video!

Thursday, May 15, 2008, 03:07 PM CST [General]

Drum roll please, after a week of trying desperately to learn Windows movie maker the Naughty Secretary Club Secretary's Delight Bracelet video is finally done.  The video shows me traveling from craft stores to thrift stores and back to Naughty Secretary Club headquarters whipping up a casted resin bracelet.  This is a project in The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girls Guide to Handmade Jewelry.  The back of the book will have all the cute secretary pictures my sister Hope illustrated for you to scan in and make your own bracelet with!  There are two other resin projects in the book, but I'll let those be a surprise.

*NEW* Naughty Secretary Club Resin Bracelet

Lemme know what you think of the video.  It's no episode of Craft Lab done out in a TV studio in California.  Nopers this baby was shot with a little hot pink camera by my sister and my husband and edited by yours truly.  I'm going to be doing more how-to videos here on the blog to get everyone in the ready position for my new book.  Speaking of I just ordered 100 copies to sell on Naughty Secretary Club!

New Website and No Sales? This Might Help.

Wednesday, May 14, 2008, 12:03 PM CST [General]

    hi jennifer!
i just launched my brand new fancy website!
i paid 3 months rent to have fancy web designers make it for me.
and i have not had one sale. not one.
    im dying over here! DYING.

i was hoping you had some advice? i know you are super successful and just rolling in press clippings.
i would really appreciate any sort of tips or tricks.
    thanks!

It seems as of late more than one person has emailed me looking for some business advice about promoting their brand spankin' new websites.  I'm gonna kill several birds with one stone and do a little bloggy-blog about my feelings on the matter.  Hopefully anyone else experiencing similar problems will find this helpful.  Given I am not the all knowing seer of the western world and a lot of this is a matter of opinion.  However, I have been running Naughty Secretary Club as my full time job for several years now and these are just a few things that have worked for me.  A friend on the West Coast sent me the above email and I went through her new adorable website with a fine tooth comb looking for issues that might be the culprit as to why her new website is not getting any sales.

Naughty Secretary Club got a major facelift last fall if you recall and it definitely affected sales.  This was the third version of the website to date.  There was the fact that the new site was delayed for several months and I did not add any new product so that everything would sync up.  Big mistake, customers got bored and quit checking back in.  A new site is just slightly disconcerting to some people as well.  Regular customers are used to the old site and how things work there.  Have you ever had to shop at a new grocery store?  It is very irritating and time consuming until you know the lay of the land.  Once people got used to my new site and saw that I was again updating regularly things got better.  The general newness is one thing, but below are a few other thoughts.

SEARCH ENGINES - When I searched for your company name, which is what I typically do rather than type in the URL the top two links that pulled up for me were broken.  Have you designer make sure all the old links within your website redirect to your new front page rather than give you an error message.  I was adamant about this when I had Naughty Secretary Club redone.  Many times bloggers that write about a site will link to a specific product page with a distinct URL rather than www.naughtysecretaryclub.com. Those links may no longer be valid since my website has been redesigned, but at least when people click that link they will get to my website and not an error page.  I just checked with your write up on Modish, the link Jena has for you was to your old site and now goes to an error page rather than your new front page.  You don't want to null and void all past press exposure.

Also did you check to make sure your programmer added meta tags to your new website.  Mine had forgotten and I had to go back in and add them myself.  Needless to say this effected my search engine rating.

LOG IN - I noticed in the top right hand corner you have a button that says log in.  When I had my new website built this was the kiss of death.  My sales all but stopped and some of that was people just getting used to the new site but I also think a big part of it was people don't want to feel like they are signing up for an account.  The minute I had this feature taken off my website where you could make a purchase without having to log in, create a password, enter in a bunch of random personal information sales picked up.  There were some pitfalls for me.  With OS Commerce which is what I use I can't sell gift certificates without this component, but I weighed my options and decided I could live without selling gift certificates.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE ON - If you are selling clothing or accessories people want to see what the item looks like on an actual person.  Not just to see how others styled it, but also to get an idea of size.  On Naughty Secretary Club I don't go to great lengths to style a photo of a necklace on an actual neck.  I am just trying to show the shopper how big the earring is, how long a necklace hangs or the drop on a purse strap.  The more stylelized your photos are the better, but for me and selling mostly one of a kind items it does not make a lot of sense for me to spend a ton of time on this.  Sure customer galleries on a website are great, but shoppers want to see the picture right there next to the product and not have to search for it.

HAVE A SALE - Well you are having a sale, 15% off as a matter of fact.  Everyone loves a good sale and there is no better way to get people to do some shopping.  The only problem is unless I had read about the sale on your blog which is not linked on your new website I would have never known.  Put that hot sale gossip on the front page of your website lady.  Email bloggers and let them know.  Twitter it for the world to see!  It's a recession, people love saving a buck or t****>

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION - I am a gal who prefers a wordy description on a product when buying and selling.  I want to read a little story about the product and find out what it is made of, if any parts of it are vintage, what the inspiration behind the piece was.  I try and write a small baby paragraph about each product.  I noticed that you had just one sentence.  This could be something.  Individual product descriptions gives each product individuality, it gives bloggers and magazines looking for editorial content a jumping off point for their story, it makes a product more interesting.  Each product having it's own name is in the same vein and equally important.  If you notice on these earrings first thing I have the words "These Earrings are Handmade and Supplies are Limited*.  If they were one of a kind I would say that instead.  If your product is handmade say it again and again, handmade is hot selling buzz word don't be afraid to toss it around.  If supplies are limited or something is one of a kind let the buyer know, it creates a sense of urgency.  If the buyer thinks they could come back and buy your product at anytime because you have the mother load then they are always going to talk themselves out of hitting the "buy" button because they are thinking they can always just get it later.  Another important feature is to tell the size of your product, especially if you don't have a picture of the product on a person.  Even if you just say about the same size as a quarter.

I have covered some other ideas for spreading the gospel here on the Naughty Secretary Club blog.  If you belong to any social networking groups let them all know about your new website.  You have an amazing product don't be shy about it.  Whip yourself up a press kit and send it off to a few magazine editors.  At the very least send out some emails to the bazillion shopping blogs out there and let them know.  I like that you have a link to your mailing list in the tool bar, that means you should have a good sized newsletter group.  Be sure and send out a newsletter to let all your subscribers know about the new site and sale.  I know you just spent a boatload of money on the new website but maybe you should consider a few ads.  Bust is my favorite for print, but you need to run an ad like 5 issues for it to get noticed and that can cost as much as the new site did.  Lots of blogs have really reasonable rates (Modish, Funky Finds, Fred Flare) and are a great way to get some exposure to your new website.  Have the ad say something about "come check out our new site", show your most adorable product picture and maybe even advertise the sale in the ad.

Again these are all a matter of opinion.  You might be the type of a person who does not want to read a wordy product description or hates getting a newsletter.  These are just the things that have worked for Naughty Secretary Club when I have changed up my website.  A new design always means slower sales for a bit, but don't fret it just takes some getting used to.  Also remember sales are always slower in the summer because people are outside enjoying the sun and not shopping online.  The economy is not super hot right now and that affects everyone and their discretionary income.  Take these things into consideration and remember that if with your old site you were selling things like hot cakes then sales will pick up again.

36 Pieces of Art I May Not be Able to Live Without

Tuesday, April 29, 2008, 11:05 PM CST [General]

One of my goals for 2008 was to buy more art.  Or at least buy more art prints.  Now that Chris and I are getting more serious about moving our bedroom I have started thinking deep home decorating thoughts.  We are moving into the master bedroom which was once my office before the garage conversion. I have started perusing some art I would like to adorn the walls in the bedroom with.  My old office has pink walls and a vintage Barkcloth window treatment that I would like to keep.  Well I might use a glaze on the pink walls and take the color down a notch.  Below is a picture of me in my office for the upcoming Handmade Nation book, but it shows the room and the window treatment.  I framed the picture in a scan of the fabric that I am also planning on using to make a duvet with.  I am kind of basing most of the room, including the art I am thinking about purchasing, based on these colors.  Good thing these are my favorite colors anyway.

I spent all dang day looking at art today and collected a few of my favorites I am seriously considering.  I want several small prints to hang in a collage like cluster.  A special thanks to A Thing of Beauty for their amazing list about the best 100 artists on Etsy.  Their list was invaluable.  Auburn and Ivory thank you as well for the links!

Interestingly while shopping around today I noticed a few reoccurring themes among several of the artists, art trends if you will.  Apparently painting chairs above all other furniture is a biggie.  Girls with big hair and things like pirate ships within that big hair seems to be popular.  Twins and in particular Siamese twins is something I was surprised to see so much of, but was oddly attracted to.  Bird cages, especially when the cage is used as the body of a woman.  It just seems like these were things I saw again and again, not as much as anthropomorphism, but a lot.  Needless to say I like all these themes and book marked several.

I'm glad I did this little blog it is helping me sort all the pieces and make a life choice seeing them all mapped out.  Any opinions?   Oddly I am really drawn to the picture of the bloody knees.  I'm kind of waiting for just the right Irana Douer piece.  I know I will be getting something by Aussie Patches, I am just not sure what yet.  I love the pictures with couples since after all this is going in a bedroom for two.  I hope that Chris does not think these are too effeminate.  They are going in a pink bedroom after all.  Oh who are we kidding, it's not like he gets a choice in home decorating.  I always joked and said one of the main qualities I looked for in a husband is that they had to have absolutely no opinion about home decorating and when I married Chris I lucked out big time in that department.
