Yes, knitting needles (round or circular) are on the TSA approved list and I've never had anyone question those. Supposedly, scissors that are shorter than 4" are allowed too, but I've had two pairs of small sewing scissors confiscated, so you may be safer to leave those in your checked luggage.

Yep, knitting needles of all shapes and sizes are definitely ok on the plane (even the long straight metal ones that look a little frightening). I've even gotten away with straight pins and sewing needles. A notch cutter is a super good investment for a portable cutter. Way better than scissors for knitting. But don't even think about bringing anything but the tiniest amount of liquids!! They'll snatch that away so fast it'll make your head spin!

Thanks for the info! Of course, I left packing until the last minute, and was trying to get everything into one carry-on, so I left my knitting behind. Then I wished I had it because I ended up with major problems and delays on all my flights. I could have finished my capelet in any one of the three airports I got stuck in!  Next time I will bring my project . . . and maybe a backup.--Meg

I just flew about 2 weeks ago and brought TWO pairs of straight needles on the plane and a set of circular. I was practicing stitches from a book and had no issues at all. My friend, however, was pulled aside and her bag was searched and they confiscated a small bottle of lotion, so Jessica is right. LOL! She was mad that they took her lotion but I went through with a ton of needles. :)

The first time I took my knitting on a plane, my husband totally freaked me out on our way to security, jokingly muttering comments under his breath about how my circulars could be used as a strangulation weapon! But I've never had any problems--I've actually had several flight attendants strike up conversations with me about knitting.
