    G is for...

    Monday, March 10, 2008, 12:46 PM [General]

I can't believe we're already up to the letter G! Here are some great things that I have found - all starting with G.

Goo-Gone - If you've ever done a craft that involves adhesive (which, most do) then you know that this stuff works miracles for areas where you really should not have used the glue. Or, if you have kids that like stickers - this takes care of that problem, too.

Glue Dots - call them what you want (snot dots, stickies, whatever), these are ideal for adding any sort of dimension or adhering a piece that might have some dimension or heft. Coming in multiple styles, I recommending having them all: mini, regular and dimensional.

Ghosts - Not just for Halloween anymore, the popularity of Ghost Hunters and other haunting shows make these paranormal occurances a part of everyday life. When's the last time you created a project around a ghost?

If you were a child of the 80's, you would remember this one, too! Who ya gonna call?

Jokes aside, here are some more crafty finds with G!

Glass Beads - or, glass in general. Great for a multitude of craft projects. The glass beads make GORGEOUS jewelry and you can even use them in mosaics.

Glamorous Yarns - The good stuff. Or, otherwise known as Luxe yarns. All I know is that one of my favorite authors, Stefanie Japel, is getting ready to release a knitting book on glamorous yarns. Can't wait!

Where else can you go to search for some of the latest craft sites, online stores, craft ideas and just about anything else. Google is probably one of the best inventions since GPS, DVR and cell phones.

That's right - Go Green! So many crafters are making the trend towards handmade versus manufacturered products to help with the impact on the environment. Paper companies are recycling more, fabric scraps and sweaters can be reincorporated into neat projects, and repurposing is probably at an all-time high. What can you do to go green?

Greek Key - This fancy little pattern that you find on ribbons, fabrics and all sorts of nifty craft items is actually called a "Greek Key". Who knew? This one - courtesy of Jonathan Adler, is a neat little spin on the design.

Without George Michael, we wouldn't have Wham. Without Wham, we wouldn't have "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go". Enough said.

Gaffer Tape - The image above shows the variety from 7 Gypsies, but gaffer tape comes in a variety of styles. I love the fabric nature of the Gypsies tape - it's perfect for book binding, scrapbooks, decorative art and just about anything else you can stick it to.

Gesso - Great for transfers, art projects and it can probably even work as bond-o, although I've never used it for such an application. Who knows?

Get Real Greetings - When the typical "Thanks" or "Miss you" card just isn't enough. Haven't you ever wanted to tell a friend that the guy she just broke up with was a total jerk anyway? Here's your chance. Make her a "Get Real" card.

Finally, one of my favorite artists - Giuseppina Cirincione - or, better known as Josie. But, Giuseppina starts with G, so she falls under G for those purposes. Josie's book "Collage Lost and Found" contains some pretty cool stuff and word on the street is that she has a new book coming. Go Josie!

That's it for G's. I'd love to hear some G's from you. I'm sure I've missed a ton but it's hard when there are so many items that tie into crafting and inspiration.

    Enjoy!

    E and F are for ....

    Friday, March 7, 2008, 09:32 AM [General]

    E and F are for…

Embellishments— Defined as anything that enhances the appearance of something without having any functional purpose, embellishments can make or break a project. From the simple to ornate, embellishments are a must for any crafter.

I love Gina2424’s use of rub-ons, gold leaf, charms and ephemera for her “Skinny Book Page” as seen on Flickr.

Ribbons are a great embellishment in many crafts, but I had to go old school with Retro80s’ braided ribbon barrettes on Etsy.

There are too many embellishments to mention in one blog post, but you’re sure to see them in future posts this month.

    Fat Quarters

I just learned this term, but I love the look of stacks of colored fabric. Oh, the possibilities with this bundle from purlsoho.com.

    Etch-a-Sketch

Oh the year’s spent creating steps...and that was about it. George Vlosich has perfected this art form. Here's a time-lapse video of his LeBron James creation.

    Fireflies
I think Flickr’s Louistib really captured the beauty of the firefly in his photo on Flickr. However, I don’t think anyone can capture the sheer joy of a warm summer night spent catching fireflies. But, Anthony Morrow comes close in this illustration.

    D is for...

    Thursday, March 6, 2008, 03:54 PM [General]

The month of March to celebrate NCM or AKA National Craft Month, so we in the Inpiration forum are bringing to you an alphabetical listing of some of our favorite things - by letter. Why? Because letters are fun. It's like Scattergories on a blog. It's Scrabulous. Anyway - here are a few of my inspirational and favorite "D"s...

Dogs - They're cute, they're cuddly, they're your best friend. Check out this Amigurumi Dog from Amigurumi Kingdom. How stinkin' cute is he? He's a Corgi - which is what our admin Robin has!

Donuts - Yum! Fried sweetness. Or, in this case, felted sweetness. Check out this super cute felted donut from artist AOI. Looks tasty!

Damask - Quite possibly the hottest accent in scrapbooking today! Teresa Collins even named an entire line after the look. Check out her Damask collection!

Diamond Glaze - You can use it for just about anything. Papercrafting, jewelry making - anything! Thank you Judikins for an awesome product!

Digital Cameras - I don't remember life before my Canon Digital Rebel. I also covet the 5D. Ah...Digi at it's finest.

Dimes - Hey, they're worth 10 cents! Get a big bag of these puppies and you can have one heck of a shopping spree at a craft store. Think - Design on a Dime!

Dremel - What CAN'T you do with a Dremel? This is the bad-boy of crafting power tools. We're talking jewelry making, manicures, pedicures, papercrafting awesomeness and goodness knows what else.

Downy Wrinkle Releaser - For when you need to get those tough wrinkles out of your fabrics and you're too lazy to use an iron. (Like myself) This stuff is up there with DVR (another D!) and GPS.

Drew Lachey - I'm only adding him because his brother is Nick and well...Nick is hot. Plus, I couldn't wait for the N's.

Doodling - What a fun activity! Sit on the phone on a conference call and doodle the day away. Oops...am I giving away too much? Have you tried it on a pair of crocks. They look REALLY cool that way!

Domiknitrix - Whip your knitting into shape. Jennifer takes you on a knitting journey that will change the way you knit!

Dragons - Hey - I was born in the year of the Dragon. RAWR! Check out DragonArt to brush up on all of your dragon-drawing skills!

That's it for D's from my end. I'm sure I have a lot more like Distress Ink, Dolly Parton and Dumplin's but you get the picture. I would like to hear of your "d"s, though!

    C is for...

    Wednesday, March 5, 2008, 09:03 AM [General]

CANDY - a little sugar high never hurt anyone, right? And when you're done snacking away, you've got all sorts of colorful wrappers to get creative with. Or, like libraryman, you can use the candy itself as the inspiration for your art. (Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like these bears are doing some deep thinking?)

Cardstock - with all the beautiful patterned papers available these days, it's easy to overlook the basics. Take today to celebrate all those solids in your paper piles!

Caffeine for the Creative Mind is chock-full of useful 15-minute exercises designed to help readers tap into a daily creative buzz. And pick up a cup of the liquid joe while you're at it. Candy + caffeine has got to be a killer creative combination.

Converse sneakers - Did you know you can create your own custom Converse kicks? No, I'm not talking about drawing all over them with a Bic pen. You can actually upload an image of your own art and have it put on a pair of custom chuck taylors. Check it out here! (Or take some inspiration from Rafi Abramov and tie your laces in a funky way today) :)

    B is for...

    Tuesday, March 4, 2008, 09:44 AM [General]

There are a lot of inspiring things that start with the letter B. At first I was thinking of food items: barbeque, bananas, Boston cream pie, baked beans, etc… This is either from numerous road trips where we played “I went to the grocery and bought….” Or, maybe I’m just hungry.

There are a lot of inspiring crafty items that start with B, too. Here are a couple that I found:

Bacchus-The Roman god of merriment and wine. He may not be the god of creativity, but he should be on the guest list for any party. Do you think it’s a coincidence that the Romans honored Bacchus on March 17, the same day we celebrate St. Patrick’s day?

Etsy’s Burning Scentsations found inspiration from the god for his Bacchus Delight lampwork bead.

I love to read, so I had to include a few books:

A few supplies that are as stimulating to look at as they are to touch:

    Beads

Brushes–This beautiful photo was taken by 3rd Foundation on Flickr.

    Balls of yarn

Because it’s almost spring, a few bunnies:

Do you like your bunnies a little funky like Nerderella’s Mummy Bunny?

Or fuzzy like Etsy’s NatureisArt’s photo, Spring Promise-Cottontail Bunny?

Or melt-in-your-mouth delicious like a Godiva chocolate bunny? (I know, I’m back to food, but how could I resist?)

Leave your comments to share which craft items that begin with B inspire you.
