My Crafts: I have spent the last 30 years scrapbooking and began when scrapbooking was not the art that it has grown to today. I enjoy scrapping pictures of my two daughters, my pets, scenery, and occasionally can slip one in of my husband and myself.
My Inspirations: My children, nature, events, magazines.
My Shows: I love House! I also watch Scrapbooking Memories, Y&R, B&B, American Idol, Wife Swap, Dr. Phil, Oprah, HGTV, TLC, and Discovery shows. I say I watch them but what I do is record them on DVR and watch when I get around to them ")
My Movies: I'm not really a movie person. I once loved watching Lifetime movies but since having my youngest I rarely make time to sit still watching something that will keep me from paying attention to my surroundings.
My Books: I love the bible and all of the meanings and lessons found there. I enjoy novels and autobiographies.
My Magazines: All scrapbooking magazines! I will read every scapbook magazine I can get my hands on, and especially Somerset Memories. I do not like the magazines you find at check-out counters since they all seem to have the same boring info as last month. I'm not a celebrity chaser so those types of mags seem to be a waste of time.
My Music: I'm pretty versatile but really love Rock-N-Roll! I sometimes listen to the old 80's stuff, sometimes you may find me listening to a little bit of country too. I can deal with anything other than Rap and Hip-Ho...it's not my thang.
    My Occupation: SAHM
My Family Members: I have a hubby of almost 14 years, two dd's, three cats, and one dog.
    My Other Hobbies: Genealogy research.

    Doodle Lesson #2

Thursday, May 1, 2008, 12:19 AM EST [General]

As it appeared in Oh Scrap Newsltter...Have YOU signed up yet???

When I read that the theme for this month would be Special Days, I knew I had some fresh ideas in mind. My husband and I just celebrated our fourteenth anniversary, his 40th birthday was in April and, then of course Mother's Day is coming. Each of these are special days to me so I decided on three layouts this month coinciding with these times.

The first has just a small amount of doodles. Hash marks around the hearts in the layout of my husband Kevin on his birthday and hand drawn hearts to emphasize the words "love" and "you" show that doodles take very little effort, but are effective. Sometimes a small amount adds interest and texture. There are layouts that may have a feel that something is missing. When this happens, add a doodle and it will fill in what seemed to be lacking. If you are concerned about doodling on your project, think about what you would like to do, draw on some scratch paper and place it where you plan to use it on the project You will get a feel for what it will be like.

I made another layout and it has a fair amount of doodles. When this picture was taken of my daughters Kristen and Katelyn, I thought the picture had a "dreamy" look. I wanted more than just store bought embellishments. I wanted something that would feel bigger than life. I doodled this fairy princess on white cardstock. I added several different embossing powders on her dress and wings after using a Versa Mark pad which is clear ink. Hoping to have the fairy princess tower over my children, I decided to cut her out of the paper. For completing that task I used the new Fiskars Fingertip Craft Knife. For this project this was very helpful. I left her foot free to hang over the picture then added a hand-drawn, scalloped border around the picture.

If you were feeling adventurous then perhaps you would like to take on a project where there are many doodles as I did in this one called GROOVY DEBORAH. Looking for a retro feel, I doodled shapes that remind me of the word groovy. I pulled ideas from a book I have from the sixties and seventies. I let my eyes substitute for my letter O‘s just to be different. To punch out the "V" I once again used my craft knife, which made everything move so fast. Unlike in the first lo where I used a small amount of doodles, this one is a small amount of embellishments and all the rest are doodles, cardstock and a corner rounder. A bonus to doodling on your projects is that they are one-of-a-kind, created completely by you and affordably priceless. Sometimes it is nice to get back to basics. Give it a try and have a groovy day!

    Doodle Lesson #1

Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 11:29 PM EST [General]

I wrote this article that appeared in Oh Scrap! E-Newsletter. Hopefully the tips will be of help to you whether you are new at this or just looking for some new inspiration.

Scrapbooking has certainly become mainstream. We find new people getting involved all the time, all over the world. With each new person comes a new idea, but here's one that is not new: DOODLES! We scribbled on our notebooks in school, we do it when we are on the phone, and we even jot down our little photographic thoughts in special notebooks that we design with our favorite scrapbooking embellishments. Doodling is an art all to itself. Doodles are hot! Although it can be recreated it still has a flair all its own. Whether you are a doodler of flowers, alphabets, boxes, faces, scrapbooking sketches, animals, or just squiggly lines you are an artist, a doodler!

Some people say they cannot draw, and believe me I tease my husband that he cannot draw stick people, but the truth is that anyone can draw! When I opened the dictionary to see the meaning of the word doodle I was surprised to see the description read "to waste time in aimless or foolish activity". I personally do not see doodling as what the description tells. I instead think of it as an art form, a release, a creative ability. Sitting with my pencil and a scrap piece of paper can cause me to use my imagination doodling something I may not have even tried. You have heard "if you don't use it you lose it"; well I am using it and having fun doing it!

If you are a beginner and do not know how to get started you will need a few basic items. Buy yourself a white eraser. Pink erasers are what you probably used in school but they will not work for this. They will leave smears and lines, which are unsightly. Check out the artist section of your local scrapbook store. More than likely, they will have what you need. Any chain store should also carry them. Visit the pens, pencils, markers, crayons...you will see so many things to play with once you are there! Choose number two pencils since the softer lead will break so often that you will find yourself getting discouraged while starting to doodle. It might be a good idea to pick up some tracing paper too.

Doodling is simple and I have a great tip for you! Go to your local library and check out a few books from the children‘s section. There you will find many titles with cute pictures. If you are so inspired read it too, no one will know J The pictures will be adorably cute~this can be your inspiration. If you would like to trace these pictures, do that or try to do it free hand with pencil. You may find many ideas in those fun and colorful stories. If it turns out looking different that what the illustrator has drawn that is perfectly fine. You want it to be your own!

Another tip: after I draw in pencil, I then write over the pencil lines with a medium point black marker, erase the pencil lines with the white eraser and start to color. I may not be back in first grade but I can feel like it when I doodle. Whether you want to doodle in small amounts like I did with my nephew's name, or doodle while adding other embellishments, or bravely taking on one where you doodle the entire background you are sure to find the way that best fits your style.

Give it a try, perhaps you will find yourself adding more doodles to your scrapbook projects next time!

    Welcome!

Tuesday, March 25, 2008, 01:34 PM EST [General]

If you are here than I'd like to say thank you for coming by! It is here that I hope to share my doodles with the scrapbooking community and welcome any questions or input. I have been a doodler since way back and although it seems natural to me, I know there are those who find it hard to do. Please join me in my lessons beginning April 1st, 2008.
