    Sewing & Cancer

    Thursday, September 4, 2008, 12:24 PM [General]

My best freind of over 30 uears was diagnosed with lung cancer in June. When she told me she was concerned about her hair falling out from the kemo treatments. We are both beauticians and I told her that I would make her pretty scarves when all of her hair fell out. She told me Tuesday evening that it had happpened that morning. So I meansured one of my husbands large hankerchiefs (22 x 22 inches) and cut out six scarves. She makes a triangle out of them, wraps them around her head and tucks the corner in at the back. You see sewing can be useful to help people when they need it desparetly.  Kim

This sounds so familiar. A really good friend of mine, mother of 4 boys, wonderful Christian person (I can't say enough nice things about her), had come down with pneumonia during the end of spring this year. After that, she could not shake that cough, a little nagging hacking cough. Doctors put her on multiple rounds of antibiotics, steroid shots, you name it, she took it. She is really into the herb/natural type things, so she put herself on some probiotics, etc. Finally, a doctor sent her to a pulmonary doc. I had not talked to her in a couple of weeks, and decided to phone her. She told me (all the while hacking away), that about a week and a half before, she had been diagnosed with lung cancer. My stomach fell down into my feet. She was a missionary in Europe for a long time, at the same time having 4 boys and home schooling them. She has never taken even a puff of a cigarette or anything that would be detrimental to her body. Her husband was a manager at a fast food place, and she was stay at home mom, homeschooling her 4 boys, taking them to soccer and baseball and anything else that needed to be done, along with being a very supportive member of her new church. They had no health insurance. M.D. Anderson hospital required $25,000 before they would do anything. She prayed and left her entire world in the hands of our Creator. In less than 8 days, they had gotten over $25,000 in donations, and a local company has a private jet and offered to fly them to M.D.A. for free. She was then told that she had a small mass on the front of her brain. The cancer was in both of her lungs. Though fluid was taken from her lungs, they discovered that she kept coughing because of the cancer being so close to her windpipe. She is on caringbridge.org, with prayers from all over the world, and complete faith that God will deliver her from this. I know the family has been going through a lot, so I made myself available, but allowed the family to soak up all of this news. They were able to get the cancer from her brain. She started taking some kind of special, very expensive herbal drink and last I heard, she is completely cured. No doubt, God sent her that drink! He works in mysterious ways. I am 40 but had hair down to my waist. I went to the hair dresser and had about 13 inches cut off for Locks of Love. I have not had short hair for years! But I do now. I mailed the LONG ponytail to Locks of Love, and am very proud that I was able to help someone, somewhere. Thanks for your story, and kudos to you for helping your friend in such a loving way.
