    Messenger Bag Free Sewing Project

    Friday, June 27, 2008, 07:22 AM [General]

    What’s there to love about this week’s free project? The easy construction? The simple but stylish look? The bonus iPod case? Yes, yes and yes!

    A nice, roomy shoulder bag can always come in handy, and this one looks fab, too. The heavy-weight, canvasy material makes it sturdy, and the large size means that you can use a large-print fabric that may have overwhelmed a smaller project. Perfect!

    This fast and fabulous bag comes from the book Sew Many Bags, Sew Little Time by Sally Southern. Inside you’ll get
    •    Step-by-step through a range of amazing yet simple bags including easy shopping bags to glamorous evening bags and cosmopolitan weekend bags
    •    Sassy accessories complement each bag, allowing you to try the techniques on a smaller scale while using leftover fabric pieces
    •    Information on how to use fabric choice and embellishments such as ribbon, buttons and beads as a way of ensuring the simplest designs unfold into eye-catching "it" bags

    Sweatshirt Jacket Free Sewing Project

    Friday, June 20, 2008, 10:46 AM [General]

    There aren’t many things that are as comfortable as a sweatshirt, but sometimes you need something a little fancier. With this week’s free sewing project, you get the best of both worlds!

    It’s true. This jacket started out as a sweatshirt. With a few sewing tricks, some complementary fabric and bit of fringe, you can transform that plain sweatshirt into a beautiful, yet comfy, special occasion jacket.

    This sweatshirt jacket comes from the book Sweatshirts by Debra Quartermain. In the book you’ll get:

    * Projects specifically for each of three main body types: apple, pear and petite
    * Techniques, such as appliqué, embroidery and beading, and ideas for incorporating new fabrics, trims, buttons and more
    * Tips from fashion consultant Diana Pemberton-Sykes to help you feel and look great in any outfit
    * Advice for accenting, altering and accessorizing each jacket
    * Full-size pattern inserts

    Hi here are some simple ones that I have done lately. I tried to find a scarf that I made for someone but can't at this time. This fabric was purchased at $1.00 a yard from WalMart when they were selling out. I find pictures I like in black and white and then trace them. I don't have my other computer hooked up with photo editing software at this time. I search through coloring pages and then trace them on the fabric and then I will embroider them. You will see 2 unfinished hankies or scarfs for furniture that I wil sew another side to and then lace around it. Then I adorne the lace with colored thread making roses and leaves to give it a fancy look. I hope you enjoy these pics. The pillowcase didn't take long to make and was a lot of fun tracing and picking through my threads as if they were crayons as I always call them my box of crayons. I have so many colors and I am always looking for more. I bought most of them at WalMart also when they stopped handling the embroidery and sewing materials. The threads were only 10 cents a piece and I purchased about 200 or more at that time. I just love finding bargains and making things for people. To see the look on their faces when they see that you have made them something that no one else has, is just the most wonderful gift of all. I have lots more ideas if anyone is interested. Thanks for writing back.

    Thanks for the comment on my birdie wall hanging. I've really used that fabric in many, many projects. It started as a lining for a felted purse I made, then the wall hanging. I'm now using it to line a coin purse I'm making from a pair of ruined jeans. I guess I bought too much fabric, but it's fun to see how many projects I can make with it.
