This week's free cross stitch pattern may be named "Knotwork Needlework Pincushion," but completing it won't leave you on pins and needles or tied up in knots. It's from Celtic Art in Cross Stitch by Barbara Hammet.

Worked in only three colors of floss on cadet blue 14-count Aida fabric, this smart design measures 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" (24cm x 24cm) finished. Don't need a pincushion? This would also make a beautiful card insert, coaster (finished with a backing fabric or inserted into an acrylic coaster), or embellishment for a journal cover. If any of you petit point fans out there want a challenge, work this pattern on silk gauze and fill in with a complimentary background color for a miniscule treasure to create a button cover or brooch.
