This is the season when people are thinking travel--whether it's a big vacation or packing up and coming home from college. To fit that theme, this week's free cross stitch project features a design for a Bon Voyage card.
His'n'Hers features two suitcases, no doubt packed by a couple headed for a weekend getaway or a cruise (or even a honeymoon). If you want to use this design in a less specific card, simply leave off the cross stitched tags that read "His" and "Hers."
This project, designed by Lesley Teare, is from Quick to Stitch Cross Stitch Cards: 120 Designs to Stitch in an Evening, a Day or a Weekend. It measures 2-3/4" x 2-1/2" (6.7cm x 6.2cm) when stitched on 14-count Aida (pale lime fabric was used in the example). What other uses can you come up with for this charming design? (What about cross stitched custom-made luggage tags?)

This week's free cross stitch pattern may be named "Knotwork Needlework Pincushion," but completing it won't leave you on pins and needles or tied up in knots. It's from Celtic Art in Cross Stitch by Barbara Hammet.
Worked in only three colors of floss on cadet blue 14-count Aida fabric, this smart design measures 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" (24cm x 24cm) finished. Don't need a pincushion? This would also make a beautiful card insert, coaster (finished with a backing fabric or inserted into an acrylic coaster), or embellishment for a journal cover. If any of you petit point fans out there want a challenge, work this pattern on silk gauze and fill in with a complimentary background color for a miniscule treasure to create a button cover or brooch.

Well, thanks to some tech problems yesterday, I wasn't able to post this week's free cross stitch project. It's here now, though--and I promise you, it was worth the wait!
This week we present "Fairies A-Z" from Cross Stitch Fairies. This project includes a complete set of patterns for every letter in the alphabet with a delightful fairy worked into the design. Letters can be worked individually for card inserts and box lids, or combined for monograms with a fantasy touch or full cross stitch name plates.
Each letter measures 3-3/4" x 3-1/2" (9.6cm x 8.4cm) finished, requiring a piece of 14-count Aida or 20-count linen measuring at least 8" x 7" (20cm x 18cm) per letter. Examples and suggestions for creative uses for these designs, individually or together, accompany the stitching instructions.

Along the edges of old maps it used to say "Here Be Dragons," indicating an unexplored world where anything might be found. You don't have to go searching for dragons; they're right here in this week's free cross stitch pattern.
"Tara Dragons Picture" is from Celtic Art in Cross Stitch by Barbara Hammet. This 13-1/2" x 5-1/2" (34.5cm x 14cm) design looks like a detail from The Book of Kells and other Irish treasures, complete with stylized dragons and Celtic knotwork interwoven throughout the pattern. Instructions include how-tos for framing this piece to create a stunning piece of Celtic art you'll be proud to display.

Mother's Day isn't far off; and if you want to stitch a special card, this project is for you.
This pretty Spring Tulip design comes from Crafting Cross Stitch Cards by Sue Cook. It measures 4" x 7" (10cm x 14cm) and is stitched on 14-count white Aida. Edges are left unfinished for a fresh and casual look. Instructions tell you how to use this piece as a card embellishment; however, you could also make a bookmark from the same design (you might want to finish the edges or use a stitch fixative so the bookmark doesn't fray).
