So often people think of cross stitch as cutesy or folksy--but it can project mystery and culture as well. Such is the case with this week's free project, the "Eye of Horus" case from Ancient Egyptian Cross Stitchby Barbara Hammett.
Eye of Horus is an ideal motif for this glasses case (or could be used as an amulet bag). It's a symbol of protection and power from the Egyptian deity Horus and his mother, Hathor (read more about it here). The design measures 3-1/4" x 4-1/8" (8.2cm x 11cm) stitched on 14-count dark green Aida. The project includes materials list and complete instructions for stitching and assembling the bag.
Ancient Egyptian Cross Stitch depicts the art, architecture, landscape, people, animals and gods of the Ancient Egyptians in glorious cross stitch designs. Subject matter includes the 'face' of Tutankhamen, the breathtaking pyramids, fascinating hieroglyphics and life on the River Nile. All 25 projects, which include pictures, wall hangings, cushions, box lids and greetings cards, have full step-by-step stitching and making-up instructions. The fascinating historical facts and insights behind every design are revealed, making this a truly unique cross stitch journey through an ancient civilization.

Angel cross stitch is incredibly popular, and this week's free project offers a real beauty.

Here in the states, Independence Day is only a week from this Friday (I can already here firecrackers in my neighborhood). If you're in a mood to show your patriotic colors, this week's project is just for you.
"Let Freedom Ring" features a charming patriotic angel (designed by Joan Elliott) from Quick to Stitch Cross Stitch Cards. Worked on 18-count Fiddler's Light Aida, the finished design measures 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" (9 cm x 9 cm). This is a perfect size for a card insert for friends or family (or send one to remember and inspire someone in the military on America's birthday). Worked on a larger count fabric, this angel would make a great mini sampler to bring out on those occasions that call for a touch of red, white, and blue. Worked on finer fabric or silk gauze, "Let Freedom Ring" could make a wonderful magnet or brooch.

Once again I'm a day late with the free cross stitch project. I was on vacation (lovely time in Virginia Beach, with a couple of nights in the Shenandoah Valley--really beautiful).
This great project for the cross stitcher in your life is from Crafting Cross Stitch Cards by Sue Cook. "The World's Greatest Cross-Stitcher" is a card designed to look like a floss sorter--how appropriate (and cute). Stitched on 14-count cream Aida, the finished design measures 4" x 3-3/4" (10cm x 9.6cm); however, by using iron-on adhesive to fix the fabric and stitches, you can cut out the design for a special effect. See the instructions for creating and assembling this unique cross stitch card project. (It would make an adorable mini sampler, too.)
